What to write on a tombstone — inscription ideas and guidance

The inscription is often the most meaningful part of a memorial. It is the message that endures — the words that family, friends, and future generations will read. At Samcro, we never charge per letter. Say everything you need to say.

Inscriptions for a mother

Forever in our hearts, always in our thoughts.

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered.

The heart of our family. Your love lives on in all of us.

In loving memory of the most devoted mother, grandmother, and friend.

She gave us roots to grow and wings to fly.

Your gentle spirit touched everyone who knew you.

Inscriptions for a father

A man of strength, integrity, and quiet courage.

Your wisdom guides us still. Your memory is our treasure.

In loving memory of a devoted father and grandfather.

He built a life of honour and left a legacy of love.

Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

The measure of a man is the lives he touched.

Inscriptions for a husband or wife

Together in life, together in memory, together forever.

My partner, my love, my everything.

Until we meet again. I carry you with me always.

A love that time cannot diminish.

In loving memory of my beloved husband/wife and our life together.

Your love was the greatest gift of my life.

Inscriptions for a child

Too beautiful for earth. Forever our angel.

Small in body, infinite in spirit.

You were our greatest joy and you are our deepest love.

A light that shone too briefly but will never be forgotten.

In the arms of God, forever in our hearts.

Our little one — you changed our world in the time you were here.

Jewish and Hebrew inscriptions

Jewish tombstones traditionally include:

The Hebrew letters פ.נ. (Po Nikbar/Nikberet — Here lies) at the top.

The Hebrew name of the deceased and the parent's name.

The date of passing in the Hebrew calendar.

The closing abbreviation תנצב״ה (Tehei Nishmato/Nishmatah Tzerurah B'tzror HaChayim — May their soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life).

We ensure every Hebrew inscription is accurate and properly formatted, coordinating with the Beth Din where required. We work in both Ashkenazi and Sephardi conventions.

"Afrikaanse grafskrifte"

Rus in vrede. Vir ewig in ons harte.

In liefdevolle herinnering aan 'n toegewyde ma/pa.

Jou lewe was 'n seën. Jou nagedagtenis is ons skat.

Sag rus, geliefde. Ons sal jou nooit vergeet.

'n Lewe vol liefde, 'n hart vol genade.

Vir altyd in ons gedagtes, vir ewig in ons harte.
